Bhai Tika 2083

भाइटीका

Bhai Tika, the fifth and final day of Tihar, celebrates the bond between sisters and brothers through an elaborate ceremony in which sisters apply a seven-coloured tika to their brothers' foreheads, weave a garland of makhamali (globe amaranth) flowers around them, and offer prayers that their brothers may live long, healthy lives protected from Yama. The ritual is rooted in the myth of Yamuna, sister of Yama, who placed tika on the god of death himself and secured a boon that any brother whose sister performs this ceremony will be shielded from untimely death. Brothers reciprocate with gifts — traditionally clothing, jewellery or money — and the day typically concludes with a shared feast, making it one of the most emotionally resonant occasions in the Nepali festival year.

Celebrating the Sibling Bond

Bhai Tika is the emotional and joyous climax of the five-day Tihar festival. It is dedicated exclusively to celebrating and strengthening the deep bond of love, respect, and protection between sisters and brothers. It is a day of family reunions, where siblings gather regardless of distance to honor their relationship and pray for each other's longevity and prosperity.

The Seven-Coloured Tika

The central ritual involves sisters applying a special 'Saptarangi Tika'—a vertical line of seven distinct colors—to the foreheads of their brothers. This is accompanied by the draping of a 'Makhamali' (Globe Amaranth) garland, a flower chosen for its remarkable ability to not wilt for months, symbolizing the sister's wish for her brother's long and unfading life. The sister also performs a circumambulation around the brother, dropping oil and holy water to create a protective barrier against death and danger.

Exchange of Gifts and Feasting

Following the Tika ceremony, there is a heartwarming exchange of gifts. Sisters present their brothers with elaborate 'Sagun' trays filled with dry fruits, nuts, sweets, and special breads like Sel Roti. In return, brothers offer gifts of clothing, money, and pledge their lifelong protection and support. The day transitions into a grand family feast, filled with laughter, traditional music, and the sharing of exquisite festive dishes, leaving lasting memories until the next year.
