The Triumph of Good
Vijaya Dashami is the crowning moment of the Dashain festival, translating to the 'Victorious Tenth'. It commemorates the mythological victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura, as well as Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana. The day embodies the universal theme of the triumph of good over evil, righteousness over injustice, and light over darkness.
The Tika Ceremony
The defining ritual of Vijaya Dashami is the Tika ceremony. Elders in the family mix yogurt, rice, and vermilion powder to create a red paste, which they apply to the foreheads of younger relatives. Along with the Tika, they offer the yellow 'Jamara' (barley shoots) grown since Ghatasthapana, bestowing heartfelt blessings for health, prosperity, and a long life.
Family Reunions and Dakshina
This day triggers a massive wave of family reunions across Nepal. Relatives travel far and wide to receive Tika from their senior family members, starting with parents and moving on to older relatives. Along with blessings, elders often give 'Dakshina' (money) to the younger ones, adding an element of joyous anticipation for children and strengthening the generational ties within the family.
Festive Feasts and New Clothes
The atmosphere on Vijaya Dashami is incredibly joyous. Families wear new clothes, symbolising a fresh start, and partake in elaborate feasts that usually feature the meat prepared from the festival's earlier sacrifices. The day is spent in celebration, playing cards, flying kites, and enjoying the company of loved ones in a spirit of absolute harmony and gratitude.
